A Perfect Ten Ten Ten (Part 1)

pa031492I’ve been seeing ten ten tens everywhere I go. It looks like this in my head: 10 10 10, or 10 10, or 1010. On Sunday, it’ll be 10.10.10 - 10th October, 2010.

I like numbers like that. It’s probably the Chinese-ness in me. We like our numbers and numerology. Nevermind that I am as Christian as they come and probably one of the most un-Chinese Chinese in this place. Or maybe it’s because my niece was born on 9th September, 1999 (beautiful 09.09.99) and she has the same irreverent sense of humour that runs so strongly in the family.

There’s a big mountain bike challenge on 10.10.10 here in Kuching. The Sematan 1010 challenge - 60km of offroad hell. How cool is that. A lot of my friends are going. I’ll be there with my camera and pod. The bike will be there too but I’m not sure if I’ll ride it. Superwoman am I but I’m not interested in shooting photos and flying along dirt tracks at the same time.

Actually, I’m not in the challenge for a silly reason. I was late registering for it. No big deal for me. As much as I love the whoosh of air on my face as I tear down a slope of gravel, mud or rock, I don’t relish the hellish heat on that particular route. And, to be painfully honest, my fitness level sucks at the moment – a result of too many months of inconsistent and mild workouts. So I’m not too broken up about it. I’ve trekked enough of Borneo’s jungles, logging roads and plantations to own that feeling of I’m-so-hot/thirsty/tired-I-want-to-die.

The key thing is I’m going to be there, cheering for my friends, and taking some kick-ass photos. And OK, OK, I’ll be bringing the bike, just in case I can’t contain myself and just absolutely positively absatively have to get on the trail too.

Life is always perfect, and so it will be come Sunday.

So what are you doing on 10.10.10?

Deep Questions

Filed under: Food For Thought — Tags: — The Wordsmith @ 4:41 pm

sky_copyright_wordsmithI was emailed this question today:

“How would you describe the past year of your life…in one sentence?”

I can do it in 5 words…

“Like a fabulous rollercoaster.”

How about you?

Little Hainan

LittleHainanCR_wordsmithI love it when business meets pleasure. I got to meet up with a friend over good food to talk about his life and passions. All in the name of work. Yes, I love my job.

So Thursday noon found me at Little Hainan at Jalan Keretapi’s Bormill Estate. There’s at least two other blog posts on this little place already (here, here, and here’s my friend’s take on it) but hey, everybody has a unique perspective right? So I’m going to put in my two cents worth of free advertising for them anyway. Just ‘cos I had a nice time and the place left a pleasant impression on me.

The chicken rice comes in three little lumps on a big plate, right next to the droolistic, fantabalistic, eat-me-already drumstick. The splash of pickled cucumber on top is pretty but disappeared fairly quickly because it tasted great too. We ordered home-made chicken curry too, but as you can’t see, I got my priorities right and ate it first before I thought to take a photo of it.

The place is not that big but I love the nouveau vieux décor – classic turn-of-the-century type marble Chinese tables and wooden chairs. The old-fashioned signboard in Chinese (people used to hand paint their signboards in Kuching – true works of art). It reminded me of treats with my grandparents at Kuching’s Khoo Hun Yeang Street when I was a kid – the aroma of local coffee, wooden furniture, the clink of porcelain cups and buzz of conversation everywhere. Kinda nice. But of course, they didn’t have fruit juicers in the old days and there wouldn’t have been a dance studio and gym on the floors above a kopitiam in nineteen seventy something.

I’m going back again for sure.
